Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which Canadian Lawyer sums up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Lerners LLP

The firm appointed Jason W. Reynar as a Toronto-based partner in its municipal advisory practice, effective Aug. 1.

He has almost two decades of experience, including in public sector roles. He has dealt with matters involving legal and governance issues, deal negotiation, and fiscal sustainability. He has helped drive improvements in urban development, infrastructure, and quality of life for communities across Ontario.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jason to our talented team, bringing with him exceptional skills, experience and innovative approaches,“ said Tammy Ring, Toronto managing partner, in the firm’s news release.

Reynar’s years in public sector executive leadership will help him advise municipalities in navigating legal complexities, changing their legislative and regulatory environments, and dealing with unprecedented growth, the news release said.

“Jason will help us grow and strengthen our service offering to municipalities and other public sector clients,” Ring added.

McCarthy Tétrault LLP

The firm welcomed Luke Carsley as a partner in its business law group in Montreal. With over two decades of experience, he has assisted buyers and sellers alike in a wide range of public and private M&A transactions.

“Luke’s depth of knowledge in cross-border M&A, combined with his experience in M&A, private equity and capital markets makes him an invaluable addition to our team," said Éric Gosselin, partner and national business law practice group leader, in the firm’s news release.

Carsley’s work has covered sectors such as fintech, insurtech, biotech, and other emerging technologies. He has also given corporate governance and securities law advice to companies across multiple industries and markets.

“Luke’s strategic, industry-focused advice will greatly benefit our clients in navigating complex transactions,” Gosselin added.

The firm also announced John R. Gilmore as a new partner in its labour and employment group in the Calgary office. He has deep experience in Canada’s energy sector.

“Our Calgary office has grown significantly over the last few years, and John’s addition to the firm as a trusted and well-regarded labour and employment lawyer is more than welcome,” said Tim Lawson, leader of the labour and employment group, in the firm’s news release.

Gilmore’s advice has touched upon the areas of executive compensation, incentive entitlements, wrongful dismissal, human rights, pay equity, executive restructuring, employee down-sizing, restrictive covenant enforcement, and disability claims, among others.

“John’s reputation for creativity, generating value and having a nuanced understanding of his clients’ businesses will be greatly appreciated, and his collegiality and dedication will be a perfect match for our teams,” Lawson said.

McMillan LLP

The firm added Radha Curpen as a partner in its Vancouver office. She will also serve as the firm’s group head of ESG and sustainability and its national client relationship ambassador, a new advisory role.

“Our business strategy is driven by responsiveness to the needs of our clients,” said Bruce Chapple, chief executive officer, in the firm’s news release. “This commitment inspired us to create a new position, to help us connect client service with opportunity and growth.”

“I look forward to helping McMillan’s clients develop and shape their ESG and sustainability strategy and commitments, comply with increasing and changing obligations and expectations, mitigate risks, and enhance relationships with Indigenous communities and stakeholders,” Curpen said.

She has been admitted to the bars of B.C., Ontario, Manitoba, and New York. She is experienced in cross-border issues, Indigenous relations, regulatory matters, climate change, human rights, and crisis management. Her work has ventured into the energy, natural resources, agribusiness, consumer goods, mining, and industrial sectors.

“I’m very pleased to come aboard and join McMillan’s growing presence in Western Canada and help deliver its national platform,” Curpen added.
