Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: July 15, 2024 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG)

The firm has announced the appointment of Patricia (Trish) Morrison as the national group head of its commercial litigation and construction group for a three-year term. Morrison previously served as BLG’s national business leader for construction.

“Trish’s leadership abilities are outstanding, as demonstrated by a very successful practice, particularly in the construction and infrastructure industries, which are pivotal to Canada’s economic growth,” said John Murphy, BLG’s CEO and national managing Partner. “Her strategic thinking, approachable style and experience in complex disputes will be of tremendous benefit to BLG clients and our disputes team on matters that shape the future of our country.”

DLA Piper (Canada) LLP

The firm has welcomed associates Ben Tustain to its Toronto office and Regan Christensen to its Calgary office.

Tustain has a broad civil litigation practice focusing on complex commercial and business litigation ‎and construction litigation. On the other hand, Christensen’s practice will focus primarily on investigations and litigation related to fraud, bribery, corruption, ‎compliance, and white-collar crime. 

Goodmans LLP

Goodmans has welcomed Eashan Karnik as an associate in the firm’s business law group.

McMillan LLP

McMillan has welcomed partners Lucie Lanctuit (litigation and dispute resolution) and Amir Kashdaran (privacy and data protection, technology) to its Montreal office.

The firm has also welcomed associates Elayna Dushenski (employment and labour relations) and Stephen Johnson (business law) to its Calgary office.

MLT Aikins

Kelsey Leik has joined the firm’s Saskatoon office. Leik practises environmental and Indigenous law. She recently completed a clerkship with the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan, where she clerked for Justice Caldwell and Justice Tholl.

Smart & Biggar

The firm has welcomed Udai Grewal, who has returned to the firm’s Vancouver office as an associate. With a background in engineering, Grewal remains engaged in the fields of technology and innovation through intellectual property (IP) law. His practice focuses on mechanical and electrical engineering patent prosecution. He believes the best client solutions come from developing a thorough understanding of their needs to apply strategic services that maximize the value of their IP.
