Canadian Lawyer announces the top regional law firms in Western Canada for 2024-25

Western Canada's legal landscape is thriving, as local firms gain recognition for their service excellence, inclusivity, and community engagement. Canadian Lawyer's 2024 rankings showcase the region's top contributors.

These law firms in BC, Alberta and the Northern Territories offer insights and solutions tailored to regional needs, distinguishing them from larger national firms. Their efforts are shaping a more inclusive and innovative legal landscape, focusing on embracing artificial intelligence and advancing truth and reconciliation with Indigenous communities.

The recognition of the top Western law firms showcases their pivotal role in advancing access to justice and setting new industry standards. Firms were assessed based on service coverage, client satisfaction, legal expertise, and regional impact. This acknowledgment highlights how localized firms are not only meeting high professional standards but also driving equity, inclusivity, and innovation in their communities.

One of this year’s winners is Farris LLP. Known for its corporate and litigation expertise, the firm offers a wide range of legal services, including securities, real estate, tax, banking, general commercial litigation, labour and employment, family law, estates, and tax litigation.

Managing Partner Bo Rothstein attributed the firm's success to its independence and the integration of specialists across multiple practice areas. “We take pride in serving a diverse range of clients in niche areas that some firms, particularly large firms, don’t venture into quite as deeply,” said Rothstein.

McLennan Ross LLP also stood out as a leading law firm in Western Canada. The firm specializes in litigation, labour, and employment law. Its extensive involvement in landmark cases, including those heard by the Supreme Court of Canada, has shaped legal frameworks across multiple industries.

“We’re in the business of solving problems. Not only do we do the work, but our clients can be sure that we will give them straight facts – the good and the bad – and we’ll always tell them how it is,” said managing partner Steve Livingstone, KC.

McLennan Ross’s reputation is bolstered by long-term client relationships, with some spanning over six decades. Survey respondents praised the firm’s “technical expertise” and “excellent service.”

The other top law firms in Western Canada are Clark Wilson, Lawson Lundell, Field Law, Harper Grey, Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer, Boughton Law Corporation, Witten, and Parlee McLaws. Their recognition underscores their vital role in shaping the legal landscape of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Northern Territories.
