Dentons, McCarthy Tétrault, MLT Aikins, Sotos announced new lawyers
Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which Canadian Lawyer sums up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.
Dentons Canada LLP
The firm welcomed Ioana Jurca as a Montreal-based partner in its litigation and dispute resolution group. She has over a decade of experience with complex domestic and international litigation and arbitration. Specifically, her practice covers civil and commercial litigation, class actions, commercial arbitration, professional liability, and insurance litigation.
“Ioana’s unique mix of public and private sector experience brings valuable new perspectives to the Firm, not only in litigation but also across a wide range of alternative dispute resolution processes,” said Christian Létourneau, Montreal managing partner, in the firm’s news release.

McCarthy Tétrault LLP
Lévy Bazinet joined the firm as a partner in its business law group in Montreal. As a dealmaker, he has over 18 years of experience in mergers and acquisitions, project development, and asset management in the infrastructure and renewable energy sectors in North America and Europe. He also has in-house counsel experience.
“Lévy’s impressive track record in managing complex transactions and overseeing major development projects will make him an invaluable asset to our team,” said Éric Gosselin, national business law practice group leader, in the firm’s news release.
“His deep expertise in renewable energy projects, coupled with his adeptness in negotiating high-stakes partnerships, showcases his ability to drive strategic growth in some of Canada’s most important emerging sectors,” Gosselin added.
MLT Aikins LLP
MLT Aikins merged with Edmonton-based firm Hillenbrand Kozicki LLP, effective Sept. 1. Following the strategic merger, the firm welcomed David Kozicki as a partner and Mark Hillenbrand as counsel in Edmonton.
Kozicki works with real estate developers, builders, and investors on various commercial and residential real estate matters. He also assists clients with commercial financing, commercial leasing, the purchase and sale of businesses, and the structuring and advancing of private loans. He also advises clients on corporate financing, reorganization, and general corporate matters.
Hillenbrand has experience in all aspects of real estate law, including the purchase and sale of businesses, condominium development, financing, and leasing. His clients include real estate developers and large and small business owners.
MLT Aikins also added two associates, five paralegals, two corporate clerks, and an operations manager from Hillenbrand Kozicki to the Edmonton office.
Sotos LLP
The Toronto-based firm appointed Idan Erez as counsel. He belongs to the bar in both Ontario and Georgia, U.S. He focuses on franchising, commercial disputes, professional liability, personal injury defence, and various kinds of civil litigation.
His experience covers shareholder disputes, commercial contract disputes, injunctive proceedings, real estate litigation, and class actions, especially in the areas of pharmaceuticals and data breaches. He has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Divisional Court, the British Columbia Superior Court, and the Alberta Court of King’s Bench.
