Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which Canadian Lawyer sums up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.
The firm announced the appointment of Sunil Kapur as its next chief executive officer, effective Jan. 1, 2025.
Kapur has more than a decade of senior management experience at the firm and over 25 years of experience advising clients. He currently leads the firm’s national litigation and dispute resolution group. He has handled employment law matters and negotiations in both the public and private sectors.
“Sunil is the ideal leader to take McCarthy Tétrault forward as we enter a new and exciting era of transformation and opportunity for our firm and our clients,” said Sarit Batner, chairwoman of the board of partners, in the firm’s news release. “Sunil has a proven track record of delivering exceptional results for our clients, our people, and our firm.”
Kapur, based in the firm’s Toronto office, will replace Dave Leonard, who finishes his second and final term as CEO on Dec. 31.
Leonard congratulated Kapur on the promotion. “Having worked closely with him over the last several years, I know that his strong leadership skills, sharp business acumen and innovative approach to client service make him well-positioned to lead our firm and our clients into the future,” said Leonard in the firm’s news release.
“I’m honoured and humbled to be chosen to lead McCarthy Tétrault as its next CEO,” said Kapur in the news release.

“Throughout his career, he has built a strong reputation managing complex transactions and credibility as a connector working alongside investment bankers and issuers,” said Greg McIlwain, Calgary office management partner, in the firm’s news release.
“Darrell’s arrival complements both our national and local growth strategy of advising top tier clients on their corporate and securities needs, including Calgary-based private equity clients and juniors in the public markets,” said Paul Davis, a partner in and leader of the capital markets group and chairman of the firm’s board of partners, in the news release.
