Annie Piché appointed to Northwest Territories Supreme Court

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Arif Virani, has announced the appointment of Annie Piché as a judge of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories.

Justice Piché, previously general counsel at the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) in Yellowknife, succeeds Justice A. Mahar, who resigned effective May 1.

Justice Piché hails from the Greater Montreal region. She obtained her law degree from the Université de Montréal in 2001 and later earned a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2004. She was called to the Northwest Territories bar in 2014.

Bilingual and proficient in both English and French, Justice Piché began her legal career by articling with the Federal Prosecution Service in 2002. That same year, she became a member of the Barreau du Québec. She then served as a Crown prosecutor with the PPSC's Quebec Regional Office, focusing on drug and organized crime prosecutions.

In 2014, Justice Piché relocated to Yellowknife to join the PPSC's Northwest Territories Regional Office. There, she handled a variety of criminal prosecutions, including cases involving sexual violence and homicide. Her expertise led her to the position of northern coordinator and general counsel with the PPSC's headquarters counsel group from 2020 to 2022.

Justice Piché has co-chaired the national Indigenous Justice and Reconciliation Committee. Since 2022, she has headed the Sexual Violence Team at the PPSC Northwest Territories Regional Office, where she continued to demonstrate her commitment to justice and community service.

Justice Piché’s appointment is part of the judicial application process established in 2016, aimed at ensuring a transparent, merit-based system for judicial appointments.

In a statement, Minister Virani expressed his confidence in Justice Piché's capabilities. "I wish Justice Piché every success as she takes on her new role. I am confident she will serve the public well as a member of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories," Virani said.
