Blakes, McCarthy Tétrault, others act in $4.45-billion commercial case

Adair Goldblatt Bieber, Bennett Jones, Cassels, Drudi Alexiou Kuchar, Miller Thomson, and Torys made appearances in three or more commercial list matters before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice this week.

The week’s most notable commercial suit was the $4.445-billion case Sakab Saudi Holding Company et al v Saad Khalid S Al Jabri et al. Bennett Jones LLP partner Amanda McLachlan advised Sakab Saudi Holding Company and eight other plaintiffs.

Addario Law Group LLP partner Andrew Max acted for M. Al Jabri and seven other defendants. His practice includes commercial and shareholder disputes, oppression remedies, director and officer liability, and professional liability.

Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP partner Ryan Morris advised Black Stallion Investments Limited and two other defendants. He focuses on corporate and transactional matters, securities and broker/dealer litigation, regulatory proceedings, and class actions.

McCarthy Tétrault LLP partner Andrew Matheson acted for defendant Dreams International Advisory Services Ltd. He heads the firm’s national white collar and investigations group. Adair Goldblatt Bieber LLP founding partner John Adair advised defendant K. Al Jabri. The other defendants appeared to be unrepresented.

The next most notable commercial suit was the $120-million case Nobul Technologies Inc. v Reed et al, CV-23-00693289-00CL. Bennett Jones LLP associate Shaan Tolani acted for plaintiff Nobul Technologies Inc. John Adair advised S. McGee and three other defendants. Kushneryk Morgan LLP partner Susan Kushneryk acted for A. Jacobs and three other defendants.

The two other defendants appeared to be unrepresented. Ross Nasseri LLP partner Justin Nasseri advised R. McGee and two other defendants to the counterclaim. He works on commercial and professional liability matters.

A third notable commercial suit was the $47-million case Scotia Capital Inc. v Wellington-Altus Private Wealth Inc. et al. Borden Ladner Gervais LLP partner David Di Paolo acted for plaintiff Scotia Capital Inc. He is the firm’s national group head for disputes.

Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein LLP partner Chris Paliare advised G. Love and seven other defendants. He tackles corporate and commercial litigation and class actions. Lerners LLP partner Cynthia Kuehl acted for defendant Wellington-Altus Private Wealth Inc. She has over two decades of civil litigation experience. The two other defendants appeared to be unrepresented.

McLachlan, who worked on the Sakab Saudi case, focuses on civil fraud, employment litigation, and securities disputes and investigations.

Tolani – who was involved in Nobul Technologies Inc. v Reed et al, CV-23-00693289-00CL – deals with corporate and commercial disputes, securities litigation, and financial crime.

Joseph Blinick, partner, represented applicant Nobul Technologies Inc. in Nobul Technologies Inc. v Reed et al, CV-23-00708257-00CL. He focuses on corporate/commercial disputes, securities litigation, class actions, and bankruptcy and insolvency matters.
