The arbitrator is the Southeast Asia managing partner at global firm Herbert Smith Freehills
Alastair Henderson, the Singapore-based Southeast Asia managing partner at global firm Herbert Smith Freehills, has been appointed to the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) Court of Arbitration.
The arbitrator brings more than 25 years of international arbitration and dispute resolution experience. He has helped to develop arbitration in the Asia-Pacific region.
He served as counsel and arbitrator in complex disputes spanning construction, infrastructure, energy, transport and commercial contracts. He also worked in Bangkok, building his knowledge of arbitration and dispute resolution throughout South and Southeast Asia.
Henderson has advised governments, public bodies, major multinational corporations, and financial institutions. He has often been appointed sole, presiding, and co-arbitrator in proceedings under the rules of arbitral institutions like the SIAC, International Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, and London Court of International Arbitration.
“It is a privilege to join the SIAC Court of Arbitration, particularly at a time when Singapore continues to strengthen its position as a global hub for international dispute resolution,” Henderson said in a statement. “I look forward to working with my fellow court members to support SIAC’s mission and contribute to the continuing growth of arbitration in the region.”
The SIAC was launched in 1991 as an independent, not-for-profit organization governed by an international board and court. The Court of Arbitration primarily appoints arbitrators and supervises case administration; it is headed up by President Lucy Reed, with support from vice presidents Cavinder Bull and Toby Landau.
Other HSF partners have been appointed to significant arbitral roles as well: Hong Kong partner Simon Chapman is on the ICC International Court of Arbitration for Hong Kong; Debby Sulaiman, disputes partner at associate firm Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung, is on the ICC International Court of Arbitration for Indonesia where HSF consultant May Tai is a vice president of the court; and Shanghai partner Helen Tang is an ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR vice chair.
