Global firm Herbert Smith Freehills has announced the appointment of Gitta Satryani as the managing partner of its Singapore office.

Satryani takes the place of Fatim Jumabhoy on 1 May and will remain in the post for three years.

“Client demand for legal services continues to grow in Singapore, as a hub for the entire Southeast Asia region, and I would like to thank Fatim for her stewardship of the office and its growth over last three years,” Satryani said in a statement. “I look forward building on her success in expanding our firm and its services to our clients, including the growth of our Singapore foreign law alliance, Herbert Smith Freehills Prolegis.”

According to Asia managing partner Graeme Preston, Satryani’s appointment will help the firm grow its presence in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

“Southeast Asia is a growth priority for the firm, and our business there is growing strongly,” Preston said in a statement.

Satryani heads up HSF’s disputes practice in Southeast Asia. She concentrates on complex cross-border disputes, especially international commercial arbitration, investment treaty arbitration, and public international law.

In particular, she tackles disputes involving Indonesia, collaborating with Jakarta-based associate firm Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung. Her clients have included commercial entities, states, and SOEs.

Satryani worked in the firm’s Singapore and London offices. She has been with the firm for over 15 years, having commenced as a senior associate in October 2009, and made partner in May 2020.

She obtained her degree from the National University of Singapore and qualified as an advocate and solicitor of the Singapore Supreme Court. She is fluent in English, Bahasa Indonesia (native) and Bahasa Melayu.

On stepping down as Singapore managing partner, Jumabhoy will continue to lead the firm’s employment law practice in Asia. Within the Southeast Asia region, HSF has offices in Bangkok and Jakarta.
