US law firm Fennemore launches Project BlueWave to integrate AI into legal services

US law firm Fennemore has announced the launch of Project BlueWave, a major initiative to integrate artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and alternative fee structures into legal services.

As part of the project, Fennemore partnered with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, to integrate AI into its internal systems. This collaboration aims to improve the firm’s efficiency by allowing lawyers to search data, draft legal documents, and optimize pricing models. The integration with OpenAI is expected to make vast amounts of data accessible securely, enabling faster and more productive legal services.

James Goodnow, CEO of Fennemore, described Project BlueWave as a critical step in adapting to technological advances. "AI presents the greatest opportunity in our lifetime to rethink how we deliver legal services and provide better value to clients," Goodnow said in a statement. He emphasized that Project BlueWave is part of the firm’s strategy to capitalize on the potential of AI, while many other firms remain hesitant to embrace the technology.

The firm also revealed a merger with Lucent Law, a Spokane-based technology-focused law firm known for its flat-rate legal services, effective October 1. The merger brings four additional lawyers to Fennemore and enhances its automation capabilities, which align with the goals of Project BlueWave. Lucent Law has developed a platform that automates corporate transactional and real estate tasks, offering clients services on a flat-fee basis. This expertise will support Fennemore’s plans to expand its use of alternative pricing models.

In addition to leveraging AI and automation, Project BlueWave seeks to enhance the deployment of human resources. Fennemore is training its workforce to maximize the potential of AI and automation tools, creating a more efficient and responsive service model.

Brett Sullivan, co-founder of Lucent Law, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “AI is transforming the legal landscape. Partnering with Fennemore allows us to scale these innovations and redefine the future of legal services.”
