Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: September 30, 2024 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG)

BLG has welcomed Nadya Tymochenko and Gillian Tuck Kutarna as senior counsel in the firm’s national school boards practice. Tymochenko is a human rights and special education lawyer based in BLG’s Toronto office. She has extensive experience handling complex cases related to student discipline, special education, and health and safety.

Kutarna is a school board and social impact lawyer based in BLG’s Ottawa office. She specializes in education law, not-for-profit and charity law, and corporate governance.

“Nadya and Gillian are both skilled lawyers with the ability to deliver exceptional outcomes in the highly complex education sector,” said Graham Walker, national group head of BLG’s specialized disputes group. “Their knowledge and experience will be a great addition to our growing national school boards practice.”

Harper Grey LLP

The firm has recently welcomed Cen Yang as an associate specializing in commercial litigation.

Miller Thomson LLP

Miller Thomson has welcomed Yves Rocheleau as a partner in its Montreal office, Jane Martin as counsel, and Baira Oldvurova as an associate in its Toronto office.

Rocheleau has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, and commercial law. His expertise encompasses corporate restructuring, shareholder disputes, corporate finance, and venture capital transactions. He has also led management buyout cases and supported business owners in planning out their entrepreneurial succession, an area of the law he regularly touches on at lectures and seminars.

Martin specializes in estate planning, family business succession, and estate and capacity law mediation. She has managed complex domestic and cross-border estate and trust matters, focusing on high-net-worth families, entrepreneurs, and artists. Martin is also skilled in estate administration and document preparation.

Oldvurova is an internationally trained lawyer who earned her law degree with distinction from the Russian State University of Oil and Gas in Moscow. She holds an LLM in Canadian Common Law from Osgoode Hall Law School.
