Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: October 7, 2024 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Clark Wilson LLP

Clark Wilson’s chief operating officer, Synthia Kloot, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of MOSAIC (Multi-lingual Orientation Service Association for Immigrant Communities). Kloot has been mentoring new immigrants to Canada since 2019 as part of MOSAIC’s Workplace Connections mentoring program. With over 400 staff members, MOSAIC enriches communities through its services and advocacy, promoting the success and sense of belonging of newcomers and individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Lenczner Slaght LLP

The firm has welcomed Monika Steger as junior counsel and Adam Davis as associate. Steger has advised regulated health professionals in areas of health law including medical negligence, privacy issues, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario proceedings, hospital privileges matters, and other administrative and regulatory health issues.

Davis previously summered and articled at the firm, where he gained experience in various matters, including tort and professional negligence trials, contempt proceedings, Mareva and Norwich orders, and oppression proceedings. He also served as a judicial law clerk to Justice Judith Woods of the Federal Court of Appeal.

Marshall Law

Employment and human rights lawyer Kathryn Marshall launched a new law firm in Toronto. Marshall Law advocates for individuals who have experienced abuse, harassment, discrimination, and unfair treatment in the workplace.

Miller Thomson LLP

Florind Polo has joined Miller Thomson’s Toronto business law group as a partner. Polo is experienced in domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, shareholder activism, and corporate finance.

The firm has announced the election of its new chair, Peter Castiel, succeeding Jeffrey Singer, who will continue his Toronto-based mergers and acquisitions practice. Castiel will oversee the firm's strategic direction while continuing his work in mergers and acquisitions. He has expertise in advising private equity funds, sovereign wealth funds and leading public and private companies in connection with complex acquisitions, divestitures and investments.

Additionally, Sophie Lamonde has been appointed managing partner of the firm’s Montréal office. Lamonde specializes in mergers and acquisitions and private equity, focusing on cross-border transactions. Her corporate law experience includes advising Canadian and international clients in acquisitions, divestitures and general commercial negotiations.
