Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: April 3, 2023 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Aird & Berlis

The firm has welcomed Dillon Collett to its litigation and dispute resolution team. His practice encompasses corporate, commercial and financial services litigation. He specializes in contractual disputes, injunctions, class actions, construction law, intellectual property law, environmental, shareholder and regulatory disputes, and quasi-criminal regulatory matters. Collett has represented individuals and corporations, including small and large businesses, financial institutions, municipalities and court-appointed receivers, before all levels of the courts in Ontario.

Cozen O’Connor

Cozen O’Connor has announced that Vancouver-based employment law litigator Andrea Piercy will lead the firm’s employment law practice expansion into Canada. Piercy will join the firm as a member and work out of the firm’s Vancouver office. As chair of the firm’s Canadian employment law practice, Piercy will represent clients in employment law disputes, provide advice relating to employment agreements and terminations, and help clients develop or revise corporate-level employment policies and procedures.

FIJ Law LLP

The firm has welcomed two new associates, Karan Chahal and Robert Pauls. Chahal specializes in corporate, entertainment, and real estate law. He has over 13 years of experience in the entertainment business. Pauls specializes in residential and commercial real estate transactions, including secured financing, acquisitions, and dispositions of real property. He has advised clients on will and estate planning matters and has represented business clients in various areas of corporate law.

McInnes Cooper

Angela E. Simmons has joined the firm as a senior diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) advisor. Simmons was a member and deputy speaker of the Nova Scotia legislative assembly. She has over 20 years of experience in socio-economic development, education, entrepreneurship, policy, and cultural competence.

McMillan LLP

Andrew McFarlane has joined McMillan as a partner in the firm’s Toronto office. McFarlane specializes in financial services and aviation practice areas. His appointment is effective March 27.

The firm has also welcomed Ayse Gauthier as counsel to the firm’s Montréal office. Gauthier specializes in cybersecurity, privacy and data protection.

MLT Aikins

MLT Aikins has welcomed Ola Cislik as an associate lawyer in the firm’s Edmonton office and Judd Blitt as counsel in the firm’s Calgary office. Cislik specializes in commercial litigation disputes, encompassing construction, commercial, and employment law. Blitt covers contentious estate matters, commercial and civil litigation, and alternative dispute resolution. He has advised clients in disputes requiring extraordinary measures such as Mareva injunctions and Anton Piller orders.
