Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: March 20, 2023 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

McMillan LLP

A new associate has joined McMillan LLP’s ranks, effective March 13. Gray Morfopoulos joins the firm’s Vancouver office. His practice includes litigation and dispute resolution, arbitration, and public litigation. Before joining McMillan, Morfopoulos’ practice emphasized labour, litigation, and public law. He has assisted on disputes before all levels of the British Columbia and Federal courts.

Clark Wilson LLP

Clark Wilson has welcomed Rylee Hunter as an associate with the firm’s family law group. Her practice will include cohabitation agreements, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, marriage agreements, separation agreements, divorce, property division, spousal and child support, custody and guardianship, and parenting arrangements. Hunter has been committed to helping clients since being called to the bar in British Columbia in 2020 and previously volunteered her services for both Access Pro Bono and Dalhousie Pro Bono.

Ashurst

Ashurst has hired a new partner, Scarlet Reid, to its employment and safety practice. The appointment continues Ashurst’s growth strategy for its work health and safety (WHS) offering.

Reid has over 25 years of experience in work health and safety and employment law, including a previous role as a senior prosecutor with SafeWork NSW. She specializes in WHS prosecution, workplace misconduct, safety investigations, incident management, and assisting clients in responding to safety regulators.

Before her appointment to Ashurst, Reid was a partner in McCullough Robertson’s Sydney employment and safety practice.

Herbert Smith Freehills

Fritz Kleweta is Herbert Smith Freehills’ latest finance partner. Kleweta will be based in the firm’s Frankfurt office, where his practice will focus on German and cross-border leveraged and corporate finance transactions, including credit restructurings.

Kleweta specializes in acting for lenders and sponsors on complex financings, having. He has advised clients such as BlackRock, Sixth Street, HPS, Apollo, and Oakley Capital on several occasions.

The appointment brings Herbert Smith Freehills’ Germany team to over 60 lawyers, including 17 partners in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.
