McCarthy Tétrault has welcomed Marc-Philippe Gagnon as its new tax partner, operating from Montréal.

Gagnon has tackled domestic and cross-border tax matters such as mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, and private equity and venture capital fund structures and investments. He has advised clients based in Canada and overseas.

For over 10 years, he has practised in tax law, working with public and private sector businesses in the investment management, financial services, infrastructure, and real estate sectors. He has guided clients through  matters involving federal and provincial tax authorities, like audits and negotiations.

Gagnon is knowledgeable in tax regulations and has worked on Québec land transfer tax issues. Recently, he acted for investment funds on their formation and upcoming investments; he also advised a US private equity fund divesting a pharmaceutical portfolio to a US-listed company.

He worked with a French-listed company acquiring a major metal building solutions manufacturer in Canada, as well as a large technology company acquiring Canadian data centers. He also acted for a Canadian organization on financing rounds and domestic and foreign acquisitions.

Before transitioning to McCarthy Tétrault, Gagnon spent over seven years at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, where he was a tax partner as per LinkedIn.

"We’re thrilled to have Marc-Philippe join our team. His expertise in both domestic and international tax law, combined with his commercial mindset, strengthens our ability to provide clients with strategic, sophisticated tax solutions across sectors," said Brett Anderson, co-head of McCarthy Tétrault’s national tax group, in a statement.

Gagnon, who is also fluent in both English and French, praised the firm's platform and cross-practice integration.

"I’m excited to join McCarthy Tétrault and collaborate with such a talented and respected team. The firm’s national platform and cross-practice integration create the right environment to support clients through complex tax challenges. I look forward to contributing to the tax group’s continued success," he said.
