Former Canadian Bar Association president Steeves Bujold has been announced as McCarthy Tétrault’s interim chief inclusion officer effective May 5.

Bujold will head up the firm’s Inclusion Now program. He was the inaugural chair of McCarthy Tétrault’s Pride Action Group, a role he held until May 2022.

That same year, he made history as the first person with a same-sex spouse to become Canadian Bar Association president. During his tenure as 94th Canadian Bar Association president, the organization published its National Study on Wellness in the Legal Profession.

Bujold is an officer of the International Bar Association’s LGBTQI+ Law Committee, a position he was appointed to in 2023 as he prepared to step down from the Canadian Bar Association presidency. As a practitioner, he focuses on litigation and is a partner in McCarthy Tétrault’s Quebec office.

“Steeves will play a critical role in continuing our long-held commitment to DEI and ensuring that Inclusion Now continues to thrive and play a pioneering role in both our firm and the broader legal community,” said McCarthy Tétrault CEO Sunil Kapur in a statement. “We believe DEI is not a one-off set of programs or policies, but the values and commitments that are at the heart of how we operate and who we are. Steeves’ track record embodies that commitment and we are thrilled to have him join our leadership team.”

Bujold succeeds Charlene Theodore as chief inclusion officer. Theodore had been in the role since 2022.

“Charlene’s dedication and expertise have left a lasting impact on all of us, particularly in respect of her unwavering commitment to inclusion, pro-bono work, and community engagement,” said Éric Gosselin, McCarthy Tétrault’s national leader, practices, people and professional development. “Steeves is an incredibly well-respected leader in this space, both within and outside of the firm. I have every confidence that he will build on the strong foundations Charlene has established.”
