Dunton Rainville to merge with Monty Sylvestre

Law and notarial firm Dunton Rainville is set to merge with Eastern Townships notarial firm Monty Sylvestre, expanding the former's presence in Sherbrooke, Québec.

The move comes shortly after Dunton Rainville absorbed the Hackett Campbell Bouchard team last November. Monty Sylvestre's notarial human rights, estate, real estate, and business law solutions bolster Dunton Rainville's service offerings, the firm said.

"Monty Sylvestre shares Dunton Rainville's core values of excellence, rigour, and dedication. By joining forces, we are expanding our reach while maintaining our strong client relationships," said Me François Sylvestre, notary and partner at Monty Sylvestre, in a statement.

Dunton Rainville indicated that the merger would be formalized in the next few weeks.

"This merger further demonstrates our commitment to strategic growth and building a top-tier, multidisciplinary team for our clients. We are delighted to welcome the professionals from Monty Sylvestre, whose reputation is well established," said Me Jean-Jacques Rainville, Dunton Rainville's executive board chair, in a statement.

The merged firms of Dunton Rainville, Monty Sylvestre, and Hackett Campbell Bouchard will cater to entrepreneurs, businesspeople, and individuals in Sherbrooke and through the Eastern Townships. The Hackett Campbell Bouchard team brings expertise in civil and commercial litigation, real estate, and construction law.

Dunton Rainville's over 275-strong team includes 130 lawyers, notaries, and labour relations consultants. Last year, the firm celebrated its 70th anniversary and was among Canadian Lawyer's Top 10 Law Firms in Quebec for 2024-25, joining names like Lavery de Billy LLP, Langlois Lawyers LLP, Cain Lamarre LLP, BCF Business Law, Therrien Couture Joli-Coeur SENCRL, De Grandpré Chait SENCRL, Stein Monast LLP, Lapointe Rosenstein Marchand Melançon LLP, and Robinson Sheppard Shapiro LLP.

Monty Sylvestre was launched in Sherbrooke in 1892.

In February, Cox & Palmer and Benson Buffett also combined under the Cox & Palmer brand, creating one of the biggest full-service firms in Newfoundland & Labrador.
