Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: Mar. 22, 2021 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures and other announcements.

Bennett Jones LLP

The firm appointed David Hawreluk, whose practice is centred on complex contract and commercial litigation matters, as Edmonton managing partner, and elected Anu Nijhawan, a Calgary-based partner who focuses on tax law, to the partnership board.

  • Michael Shakra (Toronto) — insolvency and restructuring law
  • Sophie Virji (Calgary) — tax litigation and dispute resolution

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

BLG appointed Steve Winder, who practises labour and employment law, as regional managing partner of the Vancouver office. Robert Nearing joined as a partner in the firm’s tax group in Calgary.

Cox & Palmer

The firm welcomed Michelle Axworthy, a partner whose practice focuses on family law, to its Halifax office.

Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP

Laila Paszti joined as a partner in the firm’s technology practice in the Toronto office.

Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP

The firm welcomed Alexander Bayus as partner in the litigation and dispute resolution group in Montreal and Lindsay Clark as counsel to the technology, media and telecommunications group in the B.C. Region.

The firm also announced that Marc-André Fabien, litigation partner in the Montreal office, has been elected president of the board of directors of the Canadian Paralympic Committee for the second term, and that Julie Desrosiers, Montreal-based partner focusing on intellectual property litigation, has been appointed as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Fillmore Riley LLP

The Winnipeg-based firm announced that Stuart Blake, a partner whose practice centres on civil litigation, professional regulation and insurance law, has been admitted to the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Kushneryk Morgan LLP

Susan Kushneryk and Eric Morgan have established Kushneryk Morgan LLP, a boutique litigation and dispute resolution firm based in Toronto. The firm’s practice focuses on corporate commercial litigation and arbitration, including shareholder disputes and directors’ and officers’ liability; securities and other regulatory enforcement matters; special situations and crises; and internal investigations and risk management.

Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP

The firm, which has offices in Vancouver and Toronto, has appointed John Singleton, whose practice focuses on construction law, as its chairperson. The firm also announced the appointment of Mark Stacey, who practises commercial and business litigation, and Bruce Reynolds, a construction practitioner, as co-managing partners.
