A joint investment of $62 million will go toward rehabilitating the building
The government and the University of New Brunswick (UNB) have announced the rehabilitation of Fredericton's iconic Justice Building to become the home of the UNB Faculty of Law.
Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities Dominic LeBlanc, Parliament member Jenica Atwin, Premier Blaine Higgs, UNB President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Paul Mazerolle, and UNB Law Dean Mike Marin have announced a joint investment of more than $62 million to rehabilitate Fredericton's Justice Building.
The investment will facilitate the restoration of one of Fredericton's most historic and renowned structures. The renovations will adhere to principles of environmental sustainability, incorporating designs that minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and aiming to achieve LEED Gold certification. The upgrades will include new ventilation and communications systems, enhanced accessibility features, improved lighting, occupancy sensors, a newly constructed atrium, and reconfigured spaces for public and academic use. These improvements are expected to reduce the building's annual GHG emissions by approximately 30 percent.
Once restored, the building will serve as a hub for critical services to the community and home for the UNB Faculty of Law. Minister LeBlanc highlighted the significance of the Justice Building as the ideal symbolic home for UNB Law, given its historical significance and representation of the province's legal system.
Premier Higgs emphasized the positive implications of refurbishing one of the province's most historic buildings to serve as the faculty of law's new home. "Transitioning the building into a site that provides legal services to the public while educating the next generation of New Brunswick leaders is a positive development for the future of our province."
Dr. Paul Mazerolle, President and Vice-Chancellor of UNB, also commented in a news release, "In this historic and revitalized space, UNB Law will be able to attract more students, offer more programs and have a greater impact in our community. This is an extraordinary milestone in our history at UNB, and I look forward to seeing today's investment's impact on our city, province and beyond."
