Canadian Centre for Elder Law moves to Thompson Rivers University law school

The BC Law Institute (BCLI) and Thompson Rivers University (TRU) have announced that the Canadian Centre for Elder Law (CCEL) will be transferring to the TRU Faculty of Law, said a news release of the TRU last week.

“We are pleased that the TRU Faculty of Law will be continuing the CCEL’s important work,” said Ed Wilson, law institute board chairperson, in the TRU’s news release. “ BCLI is proud of the CCEL’s accomplishments to date, and there is still much more to do.”

According to TRU's news release, under a revised memorandum of understanding, the law library will keep the CCEL’s publications, including the Practical Guide to Elder Abuse and Neglect Law in Canada.

“Hosting the CCEL is a wonderful opportunity for the TRU Faculty of Law to deepen our research and commitment to excellence in this area,” said Daleen Millard, TRU’s dean of law, in the news release.

“We’d like to collectively thank all past staff of CCEL for their contributions to developing timely resources and capacity in the elder law sector,” Wilson said in the news release on his and Millard’s behalf.

The TRU's news release said that since 2003, the CCEL has been operating as a successful division of the law institute. The CCEL has researched and published more than 30 publications and furnished legal information and educational resources to a rising number of community organizations involved in aging.

“The range of issues related to our aging populations is diverse and the need for innovative legal approaches is more important than ever,” Millard said in TRU’s news release.

The BCLI is a BC-based independent not-for-profit law reform agency. It has conducted law reform projects in the public interest since 1997 and has collaborated with TRU Law on elder law projects. Its commitment is to research elder law reform, said the TRU’s news release.
