David Sowemimo: Top 25 influential lawyer advocating for justice

In this edition of Canadian Lawyer TV, we sat down with David Sowemimo, Founder and Managing Lawyer at Watchmaker Injury Law, to discuss his recent recognition as one of Canadian Lawyer’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers for 2024. This prestigious honor highlights Sowemimo’s dedication to personal injury law and his tireless advocacy for marginalized communities.

Sowemimo’s path to becoming a personal injury lawyer began in the insurance industry, where he worked as an adjuster. This experience gave him unique insight into how insurance companies operate. “My inside knowledge of the insurance industry, how they access files, how they operate, serves me well today as a personal injury lawyer,” Sowemimo said. This knowledge has been invaluable in helping him advocate for clients and ensure they receive fair treatment.

Watchmaker Injury Law reflects Sowemimo’s commitment to standing up for those who cannot advocate for themselves. “Watchmaker Injury Law comes out of my educational background, work experiences, and most importantly, my values—standing up for people and advocating for those who can't speak for themselves,” he explained. His firm prides itself on thorough representation, taking the time to ensure clients are fully supported throughout their cases, and leveraging technology to improve client communication.

Sowemimo’s dedication extends beyond his legal practice. He established a scholarship at the University of Manitoba for Black law students, inspired by his own experience of entering law school. “When I got into law school, it felt like such a distant goal. I wanted to make that journey easier for others,” he shared. He also serves on the Edmonton Police Commission, where he works to ensure marginalized voices are heard in discussions about policing.

Reflecting on his recognition as one of Canadian Lawyer’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers, Sowemimo expressed his gratitude. “It’s very encouraging and inspiring. It makes me want to do more and give more of my time and resources,” he said. This acknowledgment has fueled his continued commitment to advocacy and community service.
