Simon Chamberland appointed as judge of the Superior Court of Quebec

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Arif Virani, has announced the appointment of Simon Chamberland as a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Montréal.

Justice Chamberland takes over from Justice D. Turcotte, who opted to become a supernumerary judge as of September 9.

Born and raised in Montreal, Justice Chamberland holds both a Bachelor of Civil Law and Common Law from McGill University, which he obtained in 2005, following a Bachelor of Arts and Science (1998) and a Master of Philosophy (2001) from Université de Montréal. He was called to the Barreau du Québec in 2006.

Justice Chamberland began his legal career clerking for Justice Louis LeBel at the Supreme Court of Canada. In 2007, he joined McCarthy Tétrault LLP in Montréal, where he built a notable career as a litigator over the following years. His practice encompassed a wide array of civil and administrative litigation, including professional liability and disciplinary law. He represented clients in cases before the Court of Québec, the Superior Court, and the Court of Appeal of Québec, as well as various administrative tribunals.

In addition to his legal practice, Justice Chamberland contributed to the legal community by participating in several committees of the Young Bar of Montreal and the Barreau de Montréal. He has also mentored and trained young lawyers at his firm. Outside of his professional work, Justice Chamberland is passionate about literature, cinema, and sports.

Justice Chamberland’s appointment follows the judicial application process established in 2016, which emphasizes transparency, merit, and diversity to ensure the selection of highly qualified jurists.

Minister Virani expressed confidence in Chamberland's capabilities, stating, “I wish Justice Chamberland every success as he takes on his new role. I am confident he will serve Quebecers well as a member of the Superior Court of Quebec.”
