The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Arif Virani, has announced new judicial appointments in the Atlantic provinces.
Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador
Trina D. Simms, counsel at the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in St. John’s, has been appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, general division, in St. John’s.
Justice Simms, born and raised in St. Anthony, was called to the Newfoundland and Labrador bar in 2003. She has spent her legal career in public service, including as crown attorney and senior crown attorney. Most recently, she worked with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in St. John's.
A former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Justice Simms served in various capacities, including legal officer in military justice policy and research in Ottawa and military prosecutions in Edmonton. She holds the rank of major. Justice Simms has also been involved in several arts organizations and the local running community. She is a member of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women.
Court of Appeal of New Brunswick
Ivan Robichaud, a judge of the Court of King’s Bench of New Brunswick, trial division, in Bathurst, has been appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of New Brunswick.
Justice Robichaud, appointed to the Court of King’s Bench in 2018, holds a Bachelor of Fisheries Management and a Bachelor of Laws from Université de Moncton. He was called to the Law Society of New Brunswick in 1987. Prior to his appointment to the Court of King’s Bench of New Brunswick, Robichaud was a partner with Robichaud Guignard Gauvin in Shippagan, where he practised throughout his legal career in various areas of law.
Court of King’s Bench of New Brunswick
Marco R. Cloutier, chief judge of the Provincial Court of New Brunswick in Saint John, has been appointed a judge of the Court of King’s Bench of New Brunswick, trial division, in Edmundston.
Justice Cloutier, born and raised in Edmundston, was called to the New Brunswick Bar in 1998. He has served as a judge of the Provincial Court of New Brunswick since 2013 and as chief judge since 2021.
Cameron H. Gunn, a judge of the Provincial Court of New Brunswick in Fredericton, has been appointed a Judge of the Court of King’s Bench of New Brunswick, trial division, in Woodstock. Justice Gunn, born in Miramichi, was called to the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick bar in 1994. He was appointed to the Provincial Court of New Brunswick in 2019. Before this, he served as executive director of Public Prosecution Services for the New Brunswick Office of the Attorney General.
Minister Virani expressed confidence in the appointees, stating, “I wish Justices Simms, Robichaud, Cloutier, and Gunn every success as they take on their new roles. I am confident they will serve the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick well in their respective positions.”
