Raymond has been practising in the province for almost 30 years
New Brunswick Justice Minister Hugh J. Flemming recently announced the appointment of Lyne Raymond as a sitting provincial court judge in Fredericton.
"Ms. Raymond has been practising in the province for almost 30 years," said Flemming. "The judiciary and the people of New Brunswick will benefit from her expertise and professionalism."
Raymond graduated from the Université de Montréal with a bachelor of laws (civil law) in 1992 and from the Université de Moncton with a bachelor of laws (common law) in 1994. She was called to the bar in 1995 and has since built a distinguished career with the firm Humphrey Raymond in Campbellton. She is actively involved in the legal profession, serving as a member of the insurance management committee of the Law Society of New Brunswick and several of its subcommittees. Raymond has also been the chair of the Criminal Code Review Board since 2019, having served as the alternate chair and a member before that.
Raymond’s appointment increases the number of full-time provincial court judges in New Brunswick to 25, including the chief judge and the associate chief judge. Additionally, the province has four supernumerary judges and five per diem judges.
The appointment process for provincial court judges involves a thorough assessment by the provincial judicial appointment review advisors, who represent the bench, the bar, and the general public. These advisors evaluate the professional and other qualifications of each candidate. The process also includes interviews conducted by a committee composed of the chief justice of New Brunswick, the chief judge and the associate chief judge of the provincial court, one of the provincial judicial appointment review advisors representing the general public, and a senior member of the bar.
In a statement, Minister Flemming emphasized the rigorous and comprehensive nature of the appointment process, stating that it ensures only the most qualified candidates are appointed to the bench.
Raymond’s extensive experience and involvement in the legal community are expected to be significant assets in her new role.
