Top intellectual property law boutiques in Canada announced for 2024-25

Canadian Lawyer has unveiled its list of the top intellectual property (IP) law boutiques for 2024-25, recognizing firms driving innovation and providing essential expertise in an evolving legal and technological landscape.

These firms have been commended for their contributions to the Canadian IP ecosystem and their ability to help businesses navigate complex issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) and data management.

The selection process combined quantitative analysis, feedback from senior members of the legal profession, Lexpert peer survey results, and considerations of regional diversity. These firms stand out for their specialized capabilities and strategic approach to managing intellectual property.

Jarrod Hicks, IP director at Intellectual Property Ontario, highlighted the critical role boutique IP firms play in fostering young talent and addressing the rapid pace of technological change. “Boutique IP law firms are crucial in the Canadian IP ecosystem to maintain and grow IP capacity within Canada because they employ many young IP lawyers and agents and are particularly suited to develop their talents to address the quickly changing technology specialties required to support the needs of Canadian clients,” Hicks said.

Stephan Georgie, director of Intellectual Property Strategy and Management at PwC Canada, echoed these sentiments, urging the industry to better support Canadian businesses in turning innovations into valuable IP assets. He pointed out that strategic advice on protecting and monetizing intellectual property remains a critical need for businesses aiming to thrive in the global market.

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office’s (CIPO) IP Canada Report 2024 suggested a growing demand for firms with expertise in cutting-edge areas such as AI, data ownership, and regulatory compliance. Hicks and Georgie both emphasized the importance of IP firms adapting to these shifts by offering comprehensive, strategic services.
