His five-year term will commence on August 26
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, announced Drew Olsen's appointment as vice-chair and chief executive officer of the Copyright Board of Canada for a five-year term starting August 26.
In his new role, Olsen will lead the board's work and oversee its staff, ensuring the institution continues to play its role in the Canadian copyright ecosystem.
Olsen brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having served as associate director general of the audiovisual branch at Canadian Heritage. His career at the department includes leadership roles such as deputy director general of the cultural industries branch, senior director of marketplace and legislative policy, and director of policy and legislation. Olsen has also held the position of director of ownership and acquisitions at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. He holds a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia.
Minister Champagne highlighted Olsen's leadership and expertise in his announcement. He noted that the Copyright Board of Canada plays a key role in Canada’s creative economy and requires strong and innovative leadership to ensure a well-functioning copyright market.

His robust leadership experience and extensive knowledge in Canadian broadcasting, telecommunications and Internet policy development are valuable assets to the Board and Canadians,” said Minister Champagne.
Pascale St-Onge, Minister of Canadian Heritage, also praised Olsen’s appointment. She stated that at a time when Canadian artists are exploring and questioning the complex issues of copyright, visionary and experienced leadership is crucial. She described Olsen’s extensive expertise as an invaluable asset in ensuring a fair and dynamic copyright market that supports the country’s creative economy.
