Betsi Roach has been appointed as the first ever executive director at the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium.

Roach has prior leadership experience in the legal industry, having served as executive director at the Legal Marketing Association, as director of the American Bar Association’s section of intellectual property law and as practice development manager at Farella Braun + Martel LLP. At the Legal Marketing Association, she aided in boosting membership and revenue and helped with its reorganization and transformation.

She has also held leadership roles in other fields, including acting as president at Oak Advisors, as associate director at Investors’ Circle and as marketing team leader at MotivAction.

Roach has studied at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, at the University of Minnesota and at Lewis and Clark College.

As CLOC’s executive director, she will lead the full-time staff, perform oversight functions over membership activities and strategize alongside the board. Her areas of focus include enhancing CLOC’s digital experience, increasing the organization’s membership and assisting the organization in weathering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roach said that she was drawn to the position because she believed in CLOC’s community and in its mission. She said that CLOC is all about sharing ideas and working together on solutions, which is just what the industry needs.

“This is a really exciting time in legal operations,” said Roach. “From moving away from the billable hour, to streamlining and redefining value chains, to improving the way we use data and technology, there are so many big opportunities.”

Mary O’Carroll, president at CLOC and director of legal operations at Google, said that Roach has the experience, perspective and focus needed to help in building the organization and in widening its reach.

O’Carroll said that CLOC seeks to redefine the business of law. “To serve that vision and to improve our member service, we need to operate with focus and speed,” said O’Carroll. “We need to create great content and experiences for our members, both in the physical and digital worlds.”

CLOC also aims to enhance legal service delivery and to help legal operations professionals connect with other key players in the legal industry, including firms, law schools and technology providers.
