California Bar Exam pass rate climbs despite challenging conditions at the testing site

According to a report by the State Bar of California, despite frigid conditions at the Cow Palace venue, the pass rate for California's February 2024 bar exam has risen.

The State Bar announced that 1,337 applicants, constituting 33.9 percent, passed the February 2024 General Bar Exam. Additionally, 197 applicants, or 52.7 percent, successfully passed the Attorneys' Exam. Upon meeting all other licensure requirements, these candidates will soon be eligible to practice law in the state.

Leah Wilson, the executive director of the State Bar, extended her congratulations to the successful applicants of the February California Bar Exam. "We recognize their hard work, share in their excitement and celebration, and wish them the very best in their future legal careers," Wilson stated.

The pass rate for the February General Bar Exam was 32.5 percent, slightly higher than the previous year's 32.5 percent. This rise is part of a broader national trend, with similar improvements noted in New York (42 percent), Florida (41 percent), Illinois (44 percent), and Pennsylvania (48 percent). The California mean scaled score on the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) was 1327, surpassing the national average of 1318, reflecting broader improvements across various states.

In response to concerns about the Cow Palace venue, where many candidates experienced cold temperatures and inadequate restroom facilities, the State Bar undertook an independent psychometric analysis. The analysis concluded that there was no significant impact on the performance outcomes at the Daly City exam site compared to other locations. Wilson reassured that the State Bar remains committed to maintaining high testing standards and will not use the Cow Palace for the upcoming July exam.

"The State Bar is dedicated to ensuring the testing environment meets the highest standards and will incorporate the feedback from test takers to improve future administrations," Wilson added.

This year’s February bar exam, with an attendance of 3,944 candidates, saw nearly a 5 percent increase over February 2023 and a significant 26.7 percent rise from February 2022. The exam typically draws a higher proportion of repeat takers, known for lower pass rates than first-time test takers, with this year's repeat takers making up 69.7 percent of the examinees, a slight decrease from the previous year.
