She is the first female lawyer to lead the offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi
Baker McKenzie has appointed Oanh Nguyen as the managing partner for the Vietnam offices for a three-year term effective 1 January 2024. She will be the first female lawyer to lead the offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. She succeeds Manh Hung Tran, who transitions to the role of co-chair of the Asia Pacific intellectual property and data & technology practice groups.
Nguyen joined Baker McKenzie in 1995. Over her 28 years with the firm, she has led the banking & finance and capital markets practices in Vietnam and acted on many market-first transactions, including Vietnam's first local-currency sustainability bonds issue. She has served as a legal adviser to the capital markets committee of Ho Chi Minh City American Chamber of Commerce.
"Baker McKenzie has been the springboard of my career,” said Nguyan. “I am very fortunate to be working at a law firm that not only is committed to providing an inclusive and diverse workplace but has also, though its broad practice mix, given me the opportunity to practice across an array of business laws. I hope that my appointment will inspire more of our lawyers to make good use of our expansive platform to further explore their interests and excel professionally."
Shih Yann Loo, Baker McKenzie’s Asia Pacific regional chair, added: "I would like to congratulate Oanh on her appointment. Oanh's appointment is further evidence of our steadfast commitment to recognizing high performers and supporting women. I am confident that Oanh will continue our growth in the Vietnam market."
Loo said that Vietnam and the ASEAN economies are likely to stay resilient next year, fueled by businesses' strong impetus to invest and reorient their business strategy toward the region.
“This bodes well for a firm like ours that has an established presence across Asia Pacific,” said Loo. “I look forward to working with Oanh, together with the leaders of all of our Asia Pacific operations, in supporting our clients with their most significant projects in this region, leveraging the strength of our seamless, global-local law service offering."
