She had been in the role since 2019
Anne Ramberg has stepped down as co-chair of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute.
She concluded her term on December 31, 2024. She had been in the role for six years, having commenced in 2019.
“As an ardent defender of human rights, Anne’s decades-long experience in the legal arena provided the IBAHRI with a recognised and respected voice that was added to many initiatives including numerous statements and intervention letters on a wide range of global humanitarian issues,” wrote IBAHRI co-chair Mark Stephens CBE and IBAHRI Director Baroness Helena Kennedy LT KC in a joint statement.
Ramberg spoke up on several global humanitarian issues through her tenure as IBAHRI co-chair, including the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Gaza attacks, and the arrest of Palestinian human rights lawyer Diala Ayesh.
Moreover, she has taken on a number of IBA roles, including IBA Rule of Law Action Group co-chair, IBA Nominations Committee member, and IBAHRI Trust council member. She also represented the Swedish Bar Association on the IBA Council.
Ramberg previously chaired Stockholm University’s Stockholm Centre for the Rights of the Child. She also sat on the boards of Civil Rights Defenders, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and the IBA-founded Southern Africa Litigation Centre.
In 2018, she received the IBA’s Award for “extraordinary leadership in promoting human rights and the rule of law throughout the world.”
“On a personal level, Anne's strong and clear moral compass has provided invaluable leadership of the IBAHRI Council. She has been a steadfast supporter of the IBAHRI secretariat, especially evident in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic and the IBAHRI’s 25th anniversary,” Stephens and Kennedy wrote. “Her international stature and unflinching presence will be sorely missed by all who worked with her. She goes with only our best of wishes and leaving an important legacy that benefits society at large.”
