Law students at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law will soon be using some of the latest technology in their legal studies, thanks to a donation from Bennett Jones LLP.
“This donation from Bennett Jones LLP enables us to do two things: create a ‘smart classroom’ with the latest technology, to improve the learning environment, and provide additional scholarship support for our students,” says the school’s dean of law, David Percy.
“These are very high priorities for our Faculty of Law Campaign 2007, and we are extremely grateful for this most recent gift from one of our longstanding partners,” says Percy.
The contribution, which will be included in fundraising totals for the school’s push for $500 million by the end of 2008, is on top of individual donations from Bennett Jones partners. Those individual pledges have gone toward entry scholarships, which will now be endowed.
The “smart classroom” that will be built thanks to Bennett Jones’ contribution is expected to enhance the teaching and learning experience at the school through upgraded technology and furnishings.
Bennett Jones also endowed a scholarship earlier this year in honour of its former partner and current Alberta Court of Appeal Justice C.D. (Cliff) O’Brien. That gift was thanks to $25,000 donations from the firm and its litigation partners.
“Bennett Jones is dedicated to supporting a culture of sustained professional and academic excellence,” says James Heelan, managing partner of the firm’s Edmonton office. “This commitment and previous commitments from our firm will help ensure that the faculty of law continues to educate future leaders for the legal profession and society at large.”
