Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland has announced the appointment of Shereen Miller as Commissioner of the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC).
Miller, a human rights lawyer with over 20 years of experience in government, has held various senior leadership roles. Most recently, she served as senior assistant deputy minister of service innovation at Shared Services Canada. Her previous roles include leadership positions at the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), where she was instrumental in driving initiatives such as the Venture Capital Action Plan and the Accelerated Growth Service.
Her work at ISED also included overseeing regulatory functions and managing the Office of Consumer Affairs. In addition, she launched the Canadian Innovation Centre for Mental Health in the Workplace.
Miller holds degrees from McGill University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Osgoode Hall Law School. She has long been an advocate for human rights, diversity, and inclusion.
Miller will begin her five-year term on November 7, taking over from interim Commissioner Werner Liedtke. The FCAC Commissioner plays a role in protecting the rights and interests of Canadians in their interactions with financial institutions. The agency is responsible for ensuring that federally regulated financial entities, including banks, adhere to consumer protection laws and standards. Additionally, the FCAC promotes financial literacy among Canadians, working to enhance their financial well-being.
Freeland expressed her gratitude to both Miller and the outgoing Commissioner. “I extend my thanks to Ms. Miller for stepping up to advance Canadians’ rights and interests in their dealings with financial institutions across the country,” said Freeland in a statement. She added that Miller’s extensive experience in regulatory oversight and relationship-building with businesses positions her well to fulfil the agency’s mandate. Freeland also thanked Liedtke for his service over the past year.
