Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: June 3, 2024 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Clark Wilson LLP

The firm has welcomed Harman Kang as an associate in its commercial real estate law practice group. Kang’s practice covers real estate acquisitions, sales and financings, residential, retail, office, industrial, and mixed-use developments, as well as contract drafting and reviews.

McMillan LLP

The firm has recently welcomed the following associates:

  • Vincent Maltais (Montreal, capital markets and securities)
  • Samantha Morden (Calgary, financial services)
  • Alexander "Lex" Overton (Toronto, restructuring and insolvency)

Miller Thomson LLP

Miller Thomson has announced that five lawyers from Norton Rose Fulbright and Clifton Kok LLP have joined its legal team, effective May 1. In Vancouver, the firm has welcomed partners Michael Blatchford and Bryan Millman, as well as associate Daniel Szeto, to its charities and not-for-profit group.

Michael Blatchford advises clients in the charitable and tax-exempt sector on operational and governance matters. His clientele covers registered charities and non-profit organizations across healthcare, housing, education, arts, culture, environment, recreation and athletics sectors.

Bryan Millman serves clients in the charitable and tax-exempt sector, including registered charities, not-for-profit organizations, and professional bodies. His expertise covers various sub-sectors like healthcare, education, social services, recreation, and environmental initiatives.

Daniel Szeto, an associate, is establishing a specialized practice catering to clients within the charitable and tax-exempt sector.

Meanwhile, in Ontario, Michael H. Clifton, in the firm’s Waterloo office and Mark Kok, in its London office, joined the firm’s real estate group.

Michael Clifton has over two decades of legal practice. He is an expert in Ontario condominium law, offering specialized solicitor and alternative dispute resolution services. Mark Kok is experienced in land development law. He has represented various developer clients across Southwestern Ontario, focusing on condominium and land development.

SV Law

SV Law has welcomed Kristopher Kinsinger and Chris Manning to its Guelph office. Kinsinger has joined the firm’s civil litigation and municipal law practice groups. He is experienced in civil and commercial litigation, defamation law, and constitutional advocacy. Before joining SV Law, Kinsinger served as the national director of a large legal organization and acted as counsel with a boutique litigation firm.

Manning has joined the firm’s municipal law practice group. He has experience in all aspects of municipal law, including development, site plan and subdivision agreements, by-laws, development charges, and heritage matters. He has also assisted with various stages of expropriation proceedings.
