Ottawa appoints seven new judges in British Columbia

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Arif Virani has announced seven new judicial appointments in British Columbia.

Previous judges of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver Margot L. Fleming and Nitya Iyer have both been appointed as Justices of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia in Vancouver, replacing Justice C. Grauer and Justice L. Marchland respectively.

General Counsel at the Department of Justice Canada in Vancouver Judith E. Hoffman has been appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver along with Counsel at Hunter Litigation Chambers in Vancouver Shannon P. Ramsey, K.C., General Counsel at the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in Vancouver Edlyn Laurie, and sole practitioner in Vancouver Alison M. Latimer, K.C.

As Hoffman filled one of the two remaining positions that were authorized, Ramsey, Laurie, and Latimer took over for Justices J. Winteringham, M.L. Fleming, and N. Iyer, respectively.

Partner at Hamilton Fabbro Lawyers in Vancouver Lisa J. Hamilton, K.C. has been appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in New Westminster, taking over the role left behind by Justice K.W. Ball after he became a supernumerary judge in November 2022.

“I wish Justices Fleming, Iyer, Hoffman, Hamilton, Ramsay, Laurie, and Latimer every success as they take on their new roles. I am confident they will serve the people of British Columbia well as members of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and the Supreme Court of British Columbia,” said Virani.

The government has been committed to increasing the capacity of its superior courts. Since November 2015, the federal government has appointed more than 740 judges, which includes about 113 appointments since Virani’s appointment as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada on July 2023.
