Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced his new cabinet, reappointing Doug Downey as attorney general for another term.
Downey, who has served in this position since 2019, will continue overseeing the province's legal affairs, including the administration of justice and legal policy.
Following his reappointment, Downey expressed his appreciation in a social media post. "Serving our province in this role is a profound responsibility—one that I embrace with humility and dedication. I look forward to continuing the work of upholding justice and the rule of law," Downey wrote.
Downey, a Member of the Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Barrie–Springwater–Oro-Medonte, has been a part of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario since his election in 2018. He has served in the 42nd, 43rd, and now 44th Parliaments, holding the role of Attorney General since June 2019. His tenure has seen him lead justice system reforms, modernize court processes, and work on increasing access to legal services.
Before entering politics, Downey co-founded the law firm now known as Downey, Tornosky, Lassaline & Timpano Professional Corporation. He holds degrees from Wilfrid Laurier University, Brock University, Dalhousie University, and Osgoode Hall Law School and specializes in municipal and development law.
Downey's political experience includes serving as a city councillor in Orillia from 2000 to 2006 and as an Ontario Small Urban Municipalities board member. At the provincial level, he has taken on key roles such as deputy government whip, vice-chair of the select committee on financial transparency, and member of the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs.
As attorney general, Downey has overseen initiatives to enhance court operations, expand access to legal services, and promote financial transparency in government.
Premier Ford's cabinet announcement emphasized the government's commitment to protecting Ontario's economy amid trade challenges and economic uncertainty. In this term, Downey is expected to continue working on legal reforms, access to justice, and judicial administration in alignment with the government's priorities.
