Canadian Bar Association welcomes Johanne Bray as new CEO

The Canadian Bar Association has announced the appointment of Johanne Bray as chief executive officer, effective February 7.

Bray currently serves as the assistant deputy minister of the Departmental Oversight Branch at Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). In this role, she works on oversight matters related to national security, contract security, corporate security and Canada’s Integrity Regime. She also advises the deputy minister and PSPC minister on policy, cabinet, parliamentary and security affairs.

Before joining PSPC, Bray worked as a deputy attorney general and deputy minister of justice and public safety for the New Brunswick government. During her tenure, she offered advice to government ministers on issues affecting legislative, regulatory and policy matters.

She also held senior head positions at the Canadian Red Cross, Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada and Carleton University.

Bray is a lawyer by profession and has extensive expertise in governance and policy development. She also obtained a risk management certificate from the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University and a mediation certificate from the Stitt Feld Handy Group at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law.

She obtained her law degree from the University of Ottawa in 1986.
