Eugene Meehan Q.C. graduated with an LL.B. from the University of Edinburgh School of Law before being awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue an LL.M. at McGill University. He also received a second LL.B. at the University of Ottawa and was later awarded a Doctorate in Civil Law from McGill.

He articled and practised law in Edmonton at the firm now known as Parlee McLaws LLP and taught Law as a Professor at the University of Alberta. He then served as a Law Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Ottawa before being tapped by the then-Chief Justice Antonio Lamer for the post of Executive Legal Officer of the Supreme Court of Canada. Following his time at the Supreme Court, he left academia and re-entered private practice at a national law firm. He has practised appellate law for over a quarter-century and has practised at a law firm specializing in appellate litigation since 2012.

He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1999 and served as the National President of the Canadian Bar Association from 1999-2000. He also sat on the Board of Governors of two universities: for the University of Ottawa from 1988-1992 and for Saint Paul University in Ottawa from 1994-2007.

He is a practicing member of five bars in Canada, and three in the United States.
