On February 27, 2024, Hornblower Canada Co. and its affiliated travel and tourism entities were granted CCAA recognition following Chapter 11 proceedings in the U.S. due to financial distress exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. These companies, offering diverse tourist services like boat tours, walking tours, and rail excursions, have accumulated approximately $1.62 billion (US$1.2 billion) in funded debt. A significant part of this debt is backed by their Canadian operations. The pandemic-induced downturn forced them to incur heavy debt, which became unsustainable with rising interest rates and operational underperformance. Grant Thornton was appointed as the information officer for the proceedings. Legal representation included BLG for Hornblower Canada, Bennett Jones for the information officer, Blakes for GLAS Trust Company, and Osler for Deutsche Bank as the Debtor-in-Possession (DIP) lender.
