IMCO invests $531 million to Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt
The Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO) declared an investment of $531 million (US$400 million) in Northvolt AB, a front-runner in the sustainable battery sector, encompassing R&D, manufacturing, and recycling. The funding will aid Northvolt's growth, mirroring both companies' dedication to a sustainable battery supply chain. Northvolt's inaugural gigafactory in Sweden is already creating batteries using fossil-free energy. The company aims to provide 150 GWh of production capacity yearly by 2030 and produce the world's greenest batteries, intended for electric vehicles and energy storage. Emphasizing clean energy production, regional sourcing, and recycling, Northvolt's vision is to pioneer the most sustainable batteries available.
IMCO’s investment, a joint venture between its Fundamental Equities and Global Infrastructure groups, reflects their shared mission to combat climate change and support the transition to a net-zero emissions world. It showcases IMCO's actionable steps towards their Climate Action Plan, aspiring to allocate 20% of managed assets to climate solutions by 2030.
Rossitsa Stoyanova, IMCO's Chief Investment Officer, underscored the collaboration's potential for capital deployment in energy transition. Alexander Hartman, Northvolt's CFO, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership's future impact.
Legally, IMCO's strategies involve investing in companies for long-term value unlocking, covering both public market investments and equity stakes in public and pre-public firms. The Northvolt investment amplifies IMCO's emphasis on clean energy storage in its infrastructure portfolio.
