On October 24, 2022, Shizen Energy Inc., a Japanese renewable energy company, announced that it has secured an investment of $184 million (USD 135 million) from CDPQ, a global investment group. Additionally, the parties have set up a co-investment framework, with CDPQ potentially investing up to $461 million (USD 339 million) more. This financial boost will expedite Shizen Energy's renewable power plant projects, digitization of energy processes, and staff expansion in pivotal markets. Following this deal, CDPQ will have representation on Shizen Energy's Board of Directors. Shizen Energy plans to diversify its renewable energy sources in Japan, spanning from solar and wind power to biomass and small-scale hydroelectric power. They will also focus on enhancing their proprietary energy management systems and work on major solar and wind projects overseas, particularly in Southeast Asia and Brazil. Emmanuel Jaclot from CDPQ emphasized the importance of this transaction in CDPQ's long-term infrastructure strategy in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting Japan's significant role in Asia's decarbonization. Shizen Energy's Co-founders, Ken Isono, Masaya Hasegawa, and Kenji Kawado, expressed gratitude for the partnership with CDPQ, noting the alignment in their visions for a sustainable future. They emphasized their mission, "We take action for the blue planet", and committed to driving renewable energy endeavors in Japan and beyond.
