Hydro-Québec to acquire New England’s Great River Hydro for $2.8 billion
HQI US Holding LLC, a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, is set to acquire Great River Hydro, LLC for around $2.8 billion (US$2 billion). Great River Hydro, owning 13 hydropower stations with a 589-megawatt capacity across Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, is currently under affiliates of ArcLight Capital Partners, LLC ("ArcLight"). This acquisition allows Hydro-Québec to take control of New England's largest hydropower fleet, aligning with the region's rising demand for renewable energy amidst ambitious decarbonization goals. Sophie Brochu, Hydro-Québec's CEO, highlighted their long-standing partnership with New England, emphasizing the merge of expertise with Great River Hydro to further renewable energy initiatives. Scott Hall, CEO of Great River Hydro, expressed confidence in their union with Hydro-Québec, given its profound industry knowledge and history in New England. ArcLight's Founder, Dan Revers, commended the growth trajectory of Great River Hydro under their guidance and expressed assurance in Hydro-Québec's capability to uphold its legacy. Hydro-Québec intends to keep Great River Hydro as a separate entity, ensuring the retention of its circa 100 employees and their current working conditions. The acquisition is projected to diversify Hydro-Québec's revenue streams in its primary export market, promising increased revenue from year one. Finalization of the deal is contingent upon standard protocols and regulatory approval.
