Canada has agreed to purchase the Jindalee Over-the-Horizon Radar (JORN) system from Australia for $6.5 billion. This strategic defense deal aims to significantly enhance Canada's Arctic surveillance and national security capabilities by enabling the detection of airborne and maritime threats far beyond the country’s northern borders. The JORN system, developed by Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group and operated by BAE Systems, uses high-frequency radar to monitor vast distances—up to thousands of kilometers—by bouncing signals off the ionosphere.

This marks a rare instance of Australia exporting such a sensitive defense technology, and it signals closer defense cooperation between the two countries, particularly amid rising concerns over Arctic sovereignty and global security tensions.
