Atlas Global Brands (CSE) and its Ontario-based affiliates, which sold medical cannabis internationally and a small amount of recreational cannabis in Canada, obtained CCAA protection on June 20, 2024. The companies faced liquidity issues due to several events, including a cease-trade order issued by the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) because of Atlas’ failure to file continuous disclosure documents. Additionally, a dispute arose with a company in which Atlas planned to acquire a majority interest, and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) took enforcement steps, including garnishment actions and refusing to supply excise stamps. These issues were compounded by demands from certain lenders. EY was appointed as the monitor for the proceedings. Legal counsel involved included Osler for Atlas, Reconstruct for Stoke Canada Finance, and Fogler and TGF for Hillmount Capital.
