On May 3, 2022, Vance Street Capital, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm, has acquired Carmanah Technologies Corp, a company specializing in solar LED pedestrian and traffic safety technology. Carmanah joins Polara Enterprises, which Vance Street partnered with in December 2021, to create a traffic and pedestrian safety Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) platform. The new platform supports Vision Zero, a campaign to end traffic fatalities, by providing integrated safety solutions to municipalities and Departments of Transportation (DoTs). Carmanah, located in Victoria, BC, has been a prominent designer and manufacturer of solar and AC-powered systems for traffic safety since 1999. Its products are compliant with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and cater to various applications like crosswalks, school zones, and hazard marking, with a focus on cost-efficiency and environmental sensitivity. John McGaffey, President of Polara, welcomed the addition of Carmanah to Vance Street's platform, looking forward to a collaborative effort in enhancing pedestrian safety solutions. Geoff Wilcox, President & CEO of Carmanah, expressed optimism about entering a growth phase that will boost development in safety products. Similarly, Steve Sandbo, Partner at Vance Street, highlighted the investment's alignment with their strategy to foster technology and product innovation in critical safety applications. Harris Williams and Paul Hastings LLP advised Vance Street and Polara on financial and legal matters, respectively, while Fort Capital Partners and Borden Ladner Gervais LLP advised Carmanah. Barings' Global Private Credit provided the debt financing. The financial terms of the transaction were not revealed.
